Dr. Richard Brownlee
Neurosurgeon & Director
Dr. Richard Brownlee is a neurosurgeon who oversees the multi-disciplinary team that diagnoses and treats pain at the Welcome Back Pain Management & Upright MRI Centre. He has a special interest in neck and back pain, two of the most common sites of chronic pain. Dr. Brownlee has trained extensively in spinal surgery techniques and has taken courses to keep him and the Centre’s team up-to-date on the most technologically advanced protocols as they diagnose pain and develop treatment plans for clients. He is also associated with the Kamloops Surgical Centre where he provides expedited interventions for surgically treatable conditions.
Dr. Brownlee is a neurosurgeon and Chief of Surgery at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, where he has worked since 1996. He received his medical degree from the University of Calgary in 1990 where he continued in, and completed a Neurosurgery specialty in 1996. He received certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in 1996 and obtained American Board certification in Neurosurgery in 2002.
Dr. Brownlee is originally from Ontario where he received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto in 1985 and 1991 respectively.
As Program Coordinator at the Welcome Back Pain Management & Upright MRI Centre , Linda’s first priority is to open and maintain a strong line of communication between clients and Centre staff. Often she is the first person that a new client will see when welcomed to the Centre, and like all staff, her mandate is to contribute to our clients’ return to a more pain free life.
Linda has a strong background in the medical field, working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and at Vancouver General. Prior to joining the Welcome Back Centre, Linda worked as a medical secretary for a busy specialist’s office. She is a Bachelor of Science graduate from University of Saskatchewan and is known for her compassionate care of clients at the Centre.
Certified Medical Office Assistant
Lisa has worked for Dr. Richard Brownlee since 1996 and has been with the Welcome Back Centre since its inception. As an Assistant with the Welcome Back Centre, Lisa works together with all of Centre’s service providers, Program Coordinators, and the MRI Technician to ensure clients are well cared for and looked after.
She enjoys the many wonderful clients of the Centre and seeing their remarkable progress.
Candy (Candace) worked for 39 years as an RN in the hospital setting and has extensive experience in many areas of health care including pre-surgical screening. She works with Program Coordinator Linda Stone to help communicate to clients of the Centre. Her interest in people and helping to educate them on all of the available opportunities for the betterment of their health is what first brought her to the Welcome Back Pain Management & Upright MRI Centre. Having the only upright MRI in Canada and the Centre’s multi-disciplinary approach in the community is a huge asset to Kamloops.
Dr. Callie Ackermann
Dr. Callie Ackermann graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa in 1996 with a Medical Doctorate and specialized in Orthopaedics. He has been practicing in Kamloops since 2003 and his special interest is in hip and knee replacement surgery, arthroscopic knee surgery, and joint preservation surgeries of the hip.
Dr. Scott Hughes
Dr. Scott Hughes graduated from the University of Toronto with a Medical Doctorate in 2007, and from the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program from the University of British Columbia. He is a fellow of the University of Manitoba and specializes in sports
arthroscopy, upper extremity reconstruction, and trauma.
If part of a client’s assessment includes an image in the Centre’s Upright MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), Randy is the Welcome Back Upright MRI & Pain Management Centre’s team member who will ensure the client is comfortable and relaxed while undergoing this safe, non-invasive scan.
His many years of imaging experience ensure that all the Centre’s MRI images are clear and complete. Randy graduated from BCIT in 1989 and prior to joining the Centre’s staff, worked in imaging services at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops for more than 19 years. He has extensive experience in x-ray imaging, including CT scanning.
Theresa is compassionate, intuitive and firmly believes in adapting the treatment to fit the individual needs and goals of each of her patients. She has a relaxed professional presence that allows her to work well with a variety of patients. Theresa has experience working with patients who are recovering from accidents, injuries and chronic pain.
She combines Myofascial release techniques with Myofascial stretching, joint mobilization, Muscle Energy Techniques, manual lymphatic drainage, and specific exercises to facilitate healing while promoting a healthy body, mind and spirit. She is also trained in fascial taping to reduce joint pain and swelling.
Theresa looks forward to talking and working with you to help you build a regime of massage therapy and home care that will empower you to take control of your own health and wellness goals.
She is a professional member of the Massage Therapy Association of British Columbia, the Registered Massage Therapists Association of British Columbia, the Fascial Fitness World Association and Fascial Manipulation Association.
Certified Acupuncturist (AFCI) & Registered Physiotherapist
Patti completed her physiotherapy training at the University of Toronto. She has over 25 years of experience working in areas from acute care and rehab to outpatients and home care. She continues to take educational courses in the various areas of physiotherapy treatment to enhance her knowledge and skills and to provide optimal evidenced based treatment for her clients.
She believes in providing the best evidence-based treatment and personalized one-on-one sessions with a detailed assessment. She is proficient in the areas of manual therapy, modalities, exercise prescriptions, and gait and postural analysis. As a certified acupuncturist with the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada, she can incorporate acupuncture into client’s treatment plans.
Wanda Sexton (Wyatt)
Clinical Counsellor, EMDR Therapist
Wanda is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and holds a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. She founded NEON Counselling in 2014 after 16 years of counselling, mentoring and public relations experience. She is excited to be working with the team from the Welcome Back Pain Management & Upright MRI Centre.
Wanda has provided several workshops for parents, teachers, students and professionals which focus on anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns. She has provided training for college and university students on counselling techniques. Her vision and goal for counselling is to provide an approachable type of counselling. Reality based, open, honest and a ‘tell it like it is’ attitude is what clients can expect from Wanda.
Usui Reiki Master
Warren specializes in combining yin yoga and Reiki which helps to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience that is beneficial both physically and mentally. He is able to off er a unique class custom tailored to the client’s specific needs or preferences to help them recover from injury or pain. Gain greater mobility and energy by working with Warren.
Registered Holistic Nurtitionist
Rina is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist working in the Natural Health Field for a decade. In 2003 she received her diploma at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Vancouver, B.C. Her passion is to help clients of the Welcome Back Centre be healthy and happy, whether it’s a medical condition, weight loss, or simply making necessary changes to feel better and have more energy. With her expertise in nutrition, she believes the foods we eat affect both health and quality of life. To Rina, a healthy lifestyle is a journey not a destination.
As a Holistic Nutritionist, Rina does not use evasive methods of testing, such as blood or urine samples, rather, she uses a method called Nutritional Symptomatology, which is the study of symptoms as they relate to nutrition. This is a valuable tool for uncovering deficiencies and or imbalances in the body. This is a fascinating and never ending exploration of our well being in its relation to the food we eat and she will design a plan that is appropriate to each individual’s specific needs or future goals.
